Those persons who enjoy listening to books now have a new format to
borrow at the Claymont Public Library. The library now provides "playaways"
to customers who are looking for an easy to use audio book format. A
starting collection of 39 titles has been donated to the library from
the Joseph A. Wheeler memorial fund. The titles include current fiction,
classic fiction, children's and young adult fiction, as well as a few
language instruction titles.
A "playaway" is an audio book which has been digitized and preloaded into a
device weighing only six ounces. The compact size allows the user to wear it in
a pocket or around one's neck, thus making "reading on the go" easy and
comfortable. No cassettes, no CD's, nor any downloads are necessary. The entire
book is self-contained on one small "playaway" device.
"We are very excited to be able to provide this new service to our patrons who
borrow audio books," says Lorrie Wheeler, Library Director. "I especially like
that the whole book is on one device and is so light weight. It will be perfect
for traveling, going to the beach, and working in the house or the garden. It is
also ideal for people who work out, walk, or run; they can now take their book
with them as they become physically fit."
People who would like to borrow these new items may do so by coming into the
library at either the Uhrichsville or Dennison locations, or by ordering them
from the library's online catalog.
LearningExpress Library Available
On July 1, LearningExpressLibrary was added to the list of free Research Databases available to those of you who are registered Ohio library users. This is a 2 year pilot and is funded through the State Library with LSTA funds and OPLIN funds.
LearningExpressLibrary includes practice tests for all school levels as well as vocational (e.g. civil service tests, cosmetology, real estate, and law enforcement), U.S. citizenship, TOEFL and GED. OHIO LIBRARIES LAUNCH ON LINE REFERENCE SERVICE
Utilizing a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) awarded by the State Library of Ohio, public libraries in Ohio will offer a 24/7 virtual reference service starting September 7th. The online service is part of a statewide initiative that assists residents with access to information on an as-needed basis, regardless of the time of day. Reference librarians from Claymont Public Library, the Tuscarawas County Public Library, and Puskarich Public Library recently completed training and will be part of the network of professionals who provide this free service to residents.
According to Lorrie Wheeler of the Claymont Public Library, “To use the service, all residents need to do is log on to their library’s web site, click on the KnowItNow icon, and enter a zip code. From that point, the Web site guides a user to access various locations within the site.” Referencing the user-friendly layout of the site, Wheeler said “Users can ask questions on a variety of topics, chat in real time with a librarian, get help with their homework, and find answers to their questions.”
Resources from business and finance, to health and medicine to science and technology and genealogy are accessible from the site, with librarians staffing the service for real time answers to questions from users. Homework assistance is available from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. seven days a week. Access to the Web site is obtainable from a home computer, a personal laptop, a computer at work, and inside an Ohio public library.
